Walking Through the Bible: A Look at Giant Killers
Deborah: Confronting the Giant of Fear and Passive Leadership
Background / Devotional Scriptures
Key Scriptures
-
Judges 4:4–5 – “And Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, she judged Israel at that time. And she dwelt under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in mount Ephraim: and the children of Israel came up to her for judgment.”
-
Judges 4:6–9 – “And she sent and called Barak the son of Abinoam out of Kedeshnaphtali, and said unto him, Hath not the Lord God of Israel commanded, saying, Go and draw toward mount Tabor, and take with thee ten thousand men of the children of Naphtali and of the children of Zebulun? And I will draw unto thee to the river Kishon Sisera, the captain of Jabin's army, with his chariots and his multitude; and I will deliver him into thine hand. And Barak said unto her, If thou wilt go with me, then I will go: but if thou wilt not go with me, then I will not go. And she said, I will surely go with thee: notwithstanding the journey that thou takest shall not be for thine honour; for the Lord shall sell Sisera into the hand of a woman. And Deborah arose, and went with Barak to Kedesh.”
-
Judges 4:14 – “And Deborah said unto Barak, Up; for this is the day in which the Lord hath delivered Sisera into thine hand: is not the Lord gone out before thee? So Barak went down from mount Tabor, and ten thousand men after him.”
-
Judges 5:7 – “The inhabitants of the villages ceased, they ceased in Israel, until that I Deborah arose, that I arose a mother in Israel.”
Central Verse

Introduction
Deborah’s story unfolds during a time when Israel had once again fallen into sin. Because of their disobedience, God allowed them to be oppressed by King Jabin and his military commander Sisera, who had 900 iron chariots—an overwhelming force.
For 20 years, the people lived under fear, intimidation, and limitation.
But here’s what stands out: The real giant was not just Sisera—it was fear, passivity, and spiritual stagnation. Leadership had become hesitant. People were oppressed not only physically, but mentally and spiritually.
Then God raises up Deborah—a woman, a prophetess, and a judge—sitting under a palm tree, hearing from God and giving direction to the people.
Deborah represents what happens when:
-
Someone is willing to hear God clearly
-
Speak with boldness
-
And move when others hesitate
This lesson is not just about a battle—it’s about confronting the giant that tells you:
-
“Wait” when God said go
-
“You can’t” when God already called you
-
“Stay comfortable” when God is calling for movement
The Impact of the Giant (Fear & Passive Leadership)
Before victory came, the giant had already done damage:
-
Silenced the people – Judges 5:7
-
Created long-term oppression – 20 years of bondage
-
Produced hesitation in leadership – Barak would not go without Deborah
-
Stalled progress – No forward movement until someone stood up
Teaching truth:
Sometimes the greatest damage isn’t destruction—it’s delay.
Discussion
1. God Raises Up Leaders in Unexpected Places
Deborah was not sitting in a palace, nor was she surrounded by formal structures of power. She was under a palm tree (Judges 4:5), yet people consistently came to her for judgment and wisdom. This shows us that true authority does not come from position—it comes from God’s presence on a person’s life.
God often raises leaders in overlooked, unconventional, and even uncomfortable places. While others may have been waiting for a king or military leader, God chose someone who was already available, already listening, and already faithful.
👉 Lesson:
You don’t need a platform to be used by God—you need obedience. If you are faithful where you are, God will bring people and purpose to you.
2. Fear Will Try to Attach Itself to Leadership
Barak received a clear and direct command from God, yet he hesitated and placed a condition on his obedience: “If thou wilt go with me, then I will go…” (Judges 4:8). This reveals that even those who are called can struggle internally with fear, insecurity, and doubt.
Fear often disguises itself as caution, wisdom, or even humility—but at its root, it is resistance to fully trusting God. Barak knew what God said, but he still needed reassurance in the form of Deborah’s presence.
👉 Lesson:
Fear does not disqualify you—but yielding to fear will delay you.
👉 Hard truth:
Partial obedience and delayed obedience are still forms of disobedience.
3. Courage Speaks Even When Others Hesitate
Deborah did not just receive a word from God—she declared it boldly and with urgency: “Up; for this is the day…” (Judges 4:14). She did not speak timidly or suggestively; she spoke with authority, clarity, and confidence in what God had already established.
Courage is not the absence of fear—it is the decision to move forward in spite of it. Deborah’s voice became the catalyst that shifted the atmosphere from hesitation to action.
👉 Lesson:
When God speaks, you must be willing to echo His voice with boldness.
👉 Teaching insight:
Sometimes breakthrough is waiting on someone to speak with confidence what God has already said.
4. God Will Use Someone Else If You Hesitate
Because Barak hesitated, Deborah prophesied that the honor of the victory would go to a woman (Judges 4:9). That word was fulfilled through Jael, who ultimately killed Sisera. This is a powerful reminder that while God invites us into His plan, He is not dependent on us to accomplish it.
God’s purposes are bigger than any one person. When we hesitate, delay, or shrink back, God will raise up someone else who is willing to act.
👉 Lesson:
You can miss the moment—but God will not miss His purpose.
👉 Sobering truth:
Hesitation doesn’t cancel God’s plan—it only reassigns your role in it.
5. Victory Requires Action, Not Just Revelation
Deborah gave the word, but Barak still had to gather the army, go to battle, and engage the enemy. Revelation alone does not produce victory—action does. Many people receive a word from God but never see the fulfillment because they fail to move on what they heard.
Faith is not proven in what you hear—it is proven in what you do next.
👉 Lesson:
A word from God is an invitation—but obedience is the activation.
👉 Teaching point:
You cannot pray for victory and refuse to move when God says go.

Conclusion
Deborah’s story teaches us that giant killers are not always the ones with the most strength—but the ones with the most obedience and courage.
She didn’t just sit under the palm tree—
She stood up when it was time.
And because she did, a nation was delivered.
Closing Prayer
Father,
We thank You for the example of Deborah, who walked in courage, wisdom, and obedience. Help us to confront every area of fear and hesitation in our lives.
Give us boldness to move when You say move, and the strength to lead where You have called us. Remove every spirit of delay, doubt, and passivity.
Teach us to trust Your voice more than our feelings. Let us not miss our moment because of fear.
We declare that we will rise, we will act, and we will follow You fully.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
